2012 CENTREBET GEELONG CUP
What a great result this year's Centrebet Geelong Cup winner Dunaden proved to be when he established the Geelong Cup as the number one lead up to the Melbourne Cup in recent times. Dunaden's win followed on from Americain last year and Media Puzzle in 2002.
Melbourne Cup notes since Media Puzzle in 2002:
2011-Dunaden WON Geelong Cup, WON Melbourne Cup
2010-Americain WON Geelong Cup, WON Melbourne Cup
2009-Crime Scene 6th Geelong Cup, 2nd Melbourne Cup
2008-Bauer WON Geelong Cup, 2nd Melbourne Cup
2005-On a Jeune WON Geelong Cup, 2nd Melbourne Cup
2004-Zazzman 7th Geelong Cup, 3rd Melbourne Cup
2003-She's Archie 2nd Geelong Cup, 2nd Melbourne Cup
2002-Media Puzzle WON Geelong Cup, WON Melbourne Cup
Induna's win in the Mr. Papparazzi.com Geelong Classic was a highlight of the day. He was then extremely unlucky not to be the first Geelong Classic / VRC Derby winner when beaten in to second place by Sangster.
Other feature winners on the day included Top Drop in the Market Square Shopping Centre Dual Choice Plate and Inablitz in the Geelong Australia Black Pearl. The Club was extremely pleased with the field for the inaugural running of the Black Pearl. We are confident this race will go from strength to strength and are hopeful it will be upgraded to a Listed Status in the not to distant future.
Despite the warm weather (reached 31 degrees) the large crowd was extremely well behaved. Police and security praised on course patrons for their behaviour and congratulated the Club on the progress it had made over recent years in relation to implementing strategies that have minimised anti-social behaviour.
MASTER PLAN
The Club's Master Plan for the racecourse reserve is getting closer to being finalised. Along with RVL and CRV, we expect to present the Master Plan to the Minister in the New Year. Once the Minister has received the Master Plan we are hoping he will give the green light to sell Haworth Court training complex and the re-invest the funds from the sale into the implementation of phase one of the Master Plan.
2011 SAVE WATER AWARDS
Geelong Racing Club is among five businesses to be nationally recognised for sustainable water use in this year's Prime Minister's Water Wise Award.
Corio MP Richard Marles said "The Geelong Racing Club has made significant infrastructure investments around the racecourse, including a state-of-the-art stormwater harvesting system and a synthetic track. The synthetic track never needs watering, so Geelong Racing Club immediately saved about 40 000 litres of water a year. "These initiatives have reduced the venue's reliance on potable water by 90 per cent in just five years, an impressive achievement.
Head judge of the awards, Rob Gell, commented that the Club had demonstrated a willingness to invest in sustainability, employing robust, company-wide solutions through excellent partnerships with significant stakeholders. In particular he noted that the Club's partnership with the Geelong Showgrounds illustrates the commitment not only to sustainability but also the surrounding community.
The five finalists were chosen from sixteen entrants based on innovation, water savings, project delivery and the capacity to replicate the project elsewhere. |
